SETAC-2012 @ IbriCT, Sultanate of Oman

Symposium on Emerging Trends in Advanced Computing (SETAC-2012) was conducted by the Information Technology Department of Ibri College of Technology, one of seven colleges administered and managed by the Ministry of Manpower, Sultanate of Oman, on the 15th of May 2012 at the picturesque college campus located in the foothills of wilayat Ibri. The one day knowledge extravaganza was a success primarily because of the latest topics which were deliberated upon either during the course of the paper presentations, or workshops, panel discussion or even the key-note addresses. The attendants included academicians, academic administrators, technicians, students, research scholars, industry professionals from all over the Sultanate, directly and indirectly impacted by the Information Technology revolution taking place at a brisk pace. The presidential address was a perfect blend of the marriage of technology with business and management as the illustrious speaker, Ms. Sharifa Al Barami, Managing Director, Al Jazeera Global Service and Investments LLC, Knowledge Oasis, muscat dwelt upon a host of topics ranging from the times when IT was not even contemplated to the scenario when IT would completely control every sphere of the human life. The key-note address by Mr. Kaleel Mohammed, CEO, Golden Eagle Eye LLC, Knowledge Oasis, Muscat touched upon the fine prints of Information Technology and its significance in the modern era.The need for IT as an enabler was never felt more, as was portrayed by the day long cross-pollination and germination of knowledge, ideas and perspectives. The sessions included E-Learning, Cloud Computing, Data Mining & Warehousing, Mathematics, Fuzzy Logic, Artificial Intelligence, Web Services, Advanced Computing, Educational Trends, apart from the three workshops on Windows Line @ edu, Network Simulation tools-OPNET, and Introduction to Mathematics respectively. The lively and interactive panel discussion contributed by Ms. Sangeetha Sridhar, Business Content Consultant, Information Technology Authority(ITA), Oman and Mr. Janakiraman, General Manager, Bahwan IT LLC, Oman activated the grey matter of the audience, especially after the sumptuous lunch served by the warm and hospitable hosts. Yours truly along with his colleague and Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs, Mr. Hafedh Said Al Rahbi presented a paper titled, “A conceptual paper on E-learning and its significance at Ibra College of Technology”.
